For plantetary mythology contest aeirmid.deviantart.com/journal…
Sorry about the ugly watermark

Yeah, I know everyone did Venus...I was going to do one based on some crackpot Mars theory that life originated from that planet, but yeah...couldn't find stock.

Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system with temperatures soaring over 400C. Clouds of sulfuric acid reflect most sunlight, making it very dark as well. Its surface is essentially a desert littered with volcanoes.

I've always found it ironic that Venus, the most hellish planet in the solar system, is named after the goddess of love and beauty.
In contrast it seems to perfectly represent her husband Vulcan (he lives under Mt Etna in mythology -- lots of real estate for him on this planet--and it blows up when he's pissed). In this I tried to (very abstractly) depict the fractured relationship between the two. Venus is kind of escaping the hellish world and running away from Vulcan who is fuming at her disloyalty (well you can't actually see him...but I guess the lava --yes that is what it is-- being shed off kind of hints toward that). Mars makes a cameo as a really dodgey looking red circle (he's the guy she cheated with btw.).

Tried something different with heaps of textures. Yeah..ran out of time :(

Kind of inspired by the stye of *3mmI

The first thought that came to my head when I saw this was, 'this is gorgeous!'. Then I read the title and wondered why Venus is depicted as such a dark destructive force. After reading the description, it all makes sense. And I have to say, the thought process, concept and the execution is marvelous.

The colors and lighting in this one is so outstanding. I can feel the warmth in the atmosphere with the colors chosen. The thing that is the most outstanding though is the use of textures. It goes with the warm colors giving it a very dry, destructive feel. The little particles and the texture of ashes floating around brings a feel of motion to the artwork. Great choice with model stock selection too, she has a godly feel to her, esp. her pose.

The only thing that is distracting a little bit is the painted back light around the model's edges. It looks too strong and uniform and just doesn't work with the otherwise flawless work. Reducing the opacity or even getting rid of it should do the trick.

Not that I am asking for it but if I had a bigger copy of this without the dA watermark (which is taking away so much from this beautiful piece), I would stare and admire every inch of this for hours. I really hope you create a tutorial for this.

Keep up the great work.
